Recensie: Sang Young Park – Liefde in de grote stad

Ongemakkelijk schouder aan schouder Het valt nog niet mee om gay te zijn in Zuid-Korea. Er zijn natuurlijk veel ergere plekken op de wereld om gay te zijn (Noord-Korea bijvoorbeeld), maar er hangt nog wel een schaamtecultuur om openlijk homoseksuele relaties. In de steden is, zoals overal, de vrijheid groter dan elders. In Liefde in de grote stad van Sang Young Park zie je die schaamte het meest terugkomen in het hoofdstuk ‘Het universum in een stukje roodbaars’ waarin Young een relatie krijgt met een oudere jongen die hij op de universiteit ontmoet. De relatie blijft van het begin tot het einde ongemakkelijk. De politiek geëngageerde vriend lijkt zich in bijzijn van andere vooral te generen voor zijn vriendschap met Young. Dat blijkt ook als Young een keer een foto van een vriendengroep moet maken en als wederdienst de vraag krijgt of zij ook op de foto willen.

Hiervan bestaat geen beter voorbeeld dannbsp;Liefde in de grote stadnbsp;van Sang Young Park. In eigen land is dit boek een van de grootste hits van de laatste jaren en nu lijkt het succes zich door te trekken naar Europa en de VS. Na het lezen van dit boek kun je niet anders concluderen dan dat dit geheel terecht is. Als geen ander weet Sang Young Park de liefde in al zijn facetten op prachtige wijze te omschrijven. Niet alleen de mooie, romantische kant komt aan bod, maar ook liefdesverdriet, sleur en liefdeloze seks.

In recent years the internet has launched into the zeitgeist the term “incel,” referring to individuals filled with resentment about their state of involuntary celibacy — i.e., sexlessness. In nearly all cases the incel is a heterosexual male, though some have speculated on the nature of his homosexual equivalent:nbsp;a tweet I saw a few months ago, for example, posited that “the gay version of ‘incel’ is not finding a long-term relationship.” If so, then the protagonist of Sang Young Park’s novelnbsp;Love in the Big Citynbsp;is a kind of incel. With opportunities for casual sex perpetually close at hand, thanks not least to smartphone dating apps, Young longs for nothing more than a deep and lasting connection. Yet all the overlapping cultures that clam him — gay culture, “hook-up” culture, social-media culture, Korean culture — seem to have allied themselves against the fulfillment of that desire.

Born in Daegu, he graduated from Sungkyunkwan University where he earned his bachelor’s degrees in French Literature and Media Communications. He pursued graduate studies in Creative Writing at Dongguk University. The recipient of 2016 Munhakdongne Rising Writer Award for his novel, “Searching for Paris Hilton”, his published works include The Tears of an Unknown Artist, or Zaytun and How to Love in a Metropolis. Park also received the 9th and 10th Young Writer’s Award.
