About the book

The novella addresses how life is a series of chance accidents that can alter a person’s life trajectory without warning. The It features a cop-turned-private investigator (Cha) who is asked to do an unusual job for the granddaughter of John Walker, the creator of the Johnnie Walker whisky brand – retrieve the last known bottle of the White label in the world from a Korean adoptee living in France. He cancels his ‘sacred’ annual escape trip abroad to take on the case. In the meantime, Lee, a thirtyish Korean woman living in New York, gets a letter from the family of a long-forgotten friend in Lyon, France, with whom she’d gone to school together there as a child, informing her about a gift left by the girl before dying of cancer – a bottle of White Label Johnnie Walker whisky. Lee decides to make the trip to get the gift directly from the girl’s family. These two events bring Cha and Lee together in Lyon. Cha visits the Korean adoptee’s home to learn she’s already died. He also learns that someone (Lee) is coming to claim the possession of the White label bottle. Cha tracks Lee down and sets up a chance encounter with her to find a way to get his hands on the whisky. As he gets to know Lee over days of spending time together, Cha gives up his plans about the bottle, informs his client of his failed mission and accompanies Lee on a train trip to Paris, during which they swap life stories. The fiction work ends at the train station in Paris where the two say goodbye to each other. Lee has a certain piece of business from her childhood that needs a closure. She asks Cha to fly to New York to take care of her dog, with the promise that she will come back to retrieve her dog when her business in Paris is finished. In the meantime, the White label bottle, left in her hotel room by Lee, begins its own journey around the world, being tossed from one person to another by chance occurrences.
