“Korean Literature in the World” Exhibit at the 2019 Seoul International Book Fair

From June 19 to 23, the Literature Translation Institute of Korea (LTI Korea) participated at the 2019 Seoul International Book Fair and held a special exhibit on the theme of Korean literature. The exhibit’s goal was to promote the growing international popularity of Korean literature to readers in Korea and abroad, and to overseas publishers.

The exhibit’s centerpiece was a special infographic featuring a map of the world that displayed how 5,541 works of Korean literature have been translated and published around the globe. Foreign press material was put on display at each continent on the exhibit map to give visitors an in-depth look at international responses to Korean literature.

Tablets were made available in one section of the booth so visitors could listen to readings and watch interviews with Korean novelists and poets. The tablets were also loaded with book trailers, author interviews, audiobooks of classic Korean literature, and author interviews from the 2018 Seoul International Writers’ Festival, drawing visitors to the work and mission of LTI Korea.

The LTI Korea booth also featured a variety of activities for visitors to learn even more about Korean literature. LTI Korea supported a postcard-coloring event and a bookmark-making event featuring works of Korean literature published in countries like the United States, Japan, Poland, and Russia. One participant remarked that the event was an opportunity to personally see how Korean literature was reaching out to a variety of language groups and cultures.

LTI Korea has a continued booth presence at the Seoul International Book Fair, holding exhibits to introduce its activities each year. This year’s exhibit was a step up from previous events, providing a range of engaging activities and content to encourage further visitor participation. Readers at the booth were introduced to the growing expansion of Korean literature around the world at this meaningful event.
