Translation Academy Regular Course Spring Semester Literary Excursion to Gangwon Province

The Literature Translation Institute of Korea (LTI Korea) Translation Academy spring semester literary excursion for the Regular Course took place from Monday June 3 to Wednesday June 5 at Gangneung and the Pyeongchang area in Gangwon Province. A total of 27 Regular Course students from the 10th and 11th classes participated in the event, which featured a meeting with author Lee Soon-won, a visit to the Gangneung Danoje Festival, a tour of major local cultural heritage sites, and a visit to the Lee Hyoseok Literature House.

On June 3, students visited Songyang Elementary School, which was the backdrop of Gangneung writer Lee Soon-won’s Mother Brushes off Dew and Whale Rock. Lee spoke to the students about her reasons for writing these works, and about the meaning of Whale Rock, which is featured in her story.

Afterwards, Lee accompanied the students to Gyeongpodae Pavilion and Gyeongpoho Lagoon, where she explained the historical background and significance of the site.

The “Meet the Author” session with Lee took place on Anmok Beach. The event was structured as a serious question and answer session, where students had the chance to bring up a variety of questions not only about Lee’s work but also about the translator’s outlook and attitude, Lee’s planning and writing process, and the differences between adult fiction and children’s literature.

That evening, students went to the 2019 Gangneung Danoje Festival, one of the biggest celebratory events in Gangneung, and attended a performance by the Gyodong Nongak Troupe. The performance was an opportunity to learn about the traditional agricultural history and music of the Yeongdong area.

On June 4, students visited Seongyojang House in Gangneung, then headed to Woljeongsa—a Buddhist temple located at the heart of Pyeongchang’s Mount Odaesan. Students then spent time enjoying the bounties of nature on the Odaesan Seonjaegil Trail, also known as the Needle Fir Woods Trail.

On June 5, students visited the Lee Hyoseok Literature House in Bongpyeong to learn about the author’s life and literary vision.

Through this excursion, students not only learned more about literature but also had the rare opportunity to experience Gangneung’s local folk culture and the Danoje Festival. The LTI Korea Translation Academy will continue to provide a wide range of opportunities to deepen students’ understanding of Korean culture.
