Seoul Literary Society Convenes for 48th Session

On the evening of March 27, the Literature Translation Institute of Korea (LTI Korea) convened the 48th session of the Seoul Literary Society, a literary gathering that introduces Korean literature to international diplomatic delegations posted in Korea. The event took place at the British Embassy in Seoul and featured Korean poet Choi Jeongrye.

LTI Korea President Kim Sa-in gave an introduction to Choi at the event, describing her as “A poet who does away with the traditions of lyric poetry by experimenting with the language of prose in her work. Ms. Choi’s works transcend the boundaries of the personal, criticizing and even parodying overarching themes in society.” He also emphasized that poetry is particularly beloved in Korea, which boasts an impressive 20,000 poets—a large number when taking the national population into consideration.

At the session, Choi gave readings of seven poems from her anthology Instances, published in the US by Parlor Press in 2011. Choi co-translated the poems in the anthology with Professor Wayne de Fremery of Sogang University’s Department of Global Korean Studies, and fellow poet Professor Brenda Hillman of Saint Mary’s College of California. The poems included “The Forest 숲,” “Kangaroo is Kangaroo I am I 캥거루는 캥거루고 나는 나인데,” “Museum of Souls 영혼박물관,” and “Stained 얼룩덜룩, and were full of anecdotes about the act of translation. Choi remarked, “It is a translator’s role to dress and speak like, and love the writer.” Professor Emeritus An Sonjae of Sogang University also gave a reading of his English-language translation of “Kangaroo is Kangaroo I am I 캥거루는 캥거루고 나는 나인데,” enriching the already-meaningful event.
