EventName LTI Korea Holds 2017 Korean Classics Event in Berlin, Germany
Period 2017-07-14 ~ 2017-07-15
Place

The Literature Translation Institute of Korea (LTI Korea, President: Kim Seong-Kon, professor Emeritus at Seoul National University) held a Korean classics event in Berlin, in partnership with the Korean Cultural Center in Germany. The two-day event featured a performance of the pansori <Jeokbyeokga (Battle of Red Cliffs)> and a symposium on classic Korean literature. <Jeokbyeokga (Battle of Red Cliffs)>, performed in its entirety by pansori master Yoon Jin-cheol and drummer Cho Yong-su, was especially well-received by the local audience.

The performance of <Jeokbyeokga (Battle of Red Cliffs)> was held on the evening of July 14 at the ufaFabrik Varietesaal performance hall. Writer and music critic Matthias Entreß served as emcee at the event and explained the features of Korean pansori and performance to audiences prior to the recital. German-language subtitles were provided, and in spite of the lengthy three-hour performance, audiences enjoyed the pansori and even played along with tradition by giving responses to the performer throughout the song.

The symposium on Korean classics took place on July 15 at the Korean Cultural Center in Germany under the theme ‘Pansori in Europe: Between Instruction and Acquisition’.The symposium was attended by 15 speakers and participants, and was host to a discussion on the allure of pansori as a cultural heritage and its influence. Pansori master Yoon Jin-cheol and drummer Cho Yong-su, who gave the performance the previous evening, also joined one of the sessions and answered questions from the audience.

Symposium on Korean classics

The Korean classics event in Berlin provided an opportunity for LTI Korea to observe the passion locals had for Korean culture and literature. LTI Korea will continue to further the exchange of Korean classics with other countries in the future.
