     At 10 a.m. on June 15, the Literature Translation Institute of Korea (LTI Korea, President: Kim Seong-Kon, professor Emeritus at Seoul National University) held the 16th International Workshop for Translation and Publication of Korean Literature in Conference Room 327 at COEX. The workshop was held under the title of ‘Cooperation and Expertise Sharing among Cultural Institutions’, where four speakers and two discussants introduced their institutions and initiatives, and offered potential blueprints for cooperation.

     Session 1 of the workshop started with a keynote presentation from Kyung Hee University’s Professor Kim Jong Hoi, who is also Chair of the Korean Association of Literary Critics and the Society of Korean Literary Criticism. In his presentation, Kim discussed the achievements of LTI Korea and emphasized the importance of cooperation with similar overseas institutions in securing stable and competitive avenues for the publication of Korean literature.

     Kim was followed by Barbara den Ouden, who oversees support for translation of fiction and graphic novels at the Dutch Foundation for Literature. Ouden gave a presentation entitled ‘The Two-Way Translation Project from a Dutch Point of View’, where she introduced the foundation’s initiatives for the advancement of domestic literature, and discussed their expectations for future cooperation with LTI Korea. The first session of the workshop then closed with a discussion and Q&A session with Kangnam University’s Professor Kang Yu-jung.

     After the first session of the ‘Cooperation and Expertise Sharing among Cultural Institutions’ workshop, LTI Korea and the Dutch Foundation for Literature signed a memorandum of understanding for the cross-publication of Korean and Dutch literature to boost literary exchanges between the two countries. The two organizations will support the translation and publication of one another’s literature in their own countries.

     Session 2 began with a presentation from Alireza Ghazveh, one of Iran’s foremost poets and director of the literature department at Iran’s Hozeh Honari. In the presentation, entitled ‘Translation: A Table to Sit by and Chat’, Ghazveh introduced the Hozeh Honari and gave his thoughts on the cross-publication project undertaken in 2016 between the Hozeh Honari and LTI Korea. He was followed by John McGlynn, a member of Indonesia’s National Book Committee and co-founder of the Lontar Foundation, which was established for the translation of Indonesian literature. McGlynn discussed the founding of the Lontar Foundation and explained the four prerequisites for the creation of a canon of literature in translation.

     The discussion and Q&A for the second session of the workshop was moderated by Kunsan National University’s Professor Ryoo Bo Sun, who shared his own insights and led an active discussion with the audience.

     The 16th International Workshop for Translation and Publication of Korean Literature served as a meaningful opportunity for organizations that support literary translation to discuss ways to move forward and pursue deeper international exchanges.
